I am not afraid of returning to Pakistan: Musharraf

LAHORE: Former President Pervez Musharraf on Sunday assured his supporters that he was not afraid of returning to Pakistan.

He vowed his return through a video address in Lahore.

Musharraf said a new political culture should be introduced in Pakistan.

He said that the security and integrity of the country lay in changing the status quo and this change should come through his party, the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML).

He further said that steps are being taken to organise the APML in different parts of the country.

He also denounced rumours that he was trying to meet Nawaz Sharif.

If given a chance, he said he would bring back the local government system in the country.

Earlier, member of his political party had assured that Musharraf would return to Pakistan at the end of the year, despite reports to the contrary.

An earlier report in The Express Tribune cited that Former president Pervez Musharraf had abandoned his plans to return to Pakistan after the military leadership refused to provide him the security to counter multiple threats to his life emanating from Balochistan and the tribal areas.

The party appears to be gearing up for a political fight against Punjab’s ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz). The APML has issued a ‘charge sheet’ outlining the failures of the Punjab government and written a letter to elected local officials in Punjab asking them to support the party.
